Project
summary |
This project aimed to improve technical understanding and the methods for management of coastal zone habitats. The project developed a useful database collating all available information on the Land Water Interface in the Caribbean and helped to identify gaps in previously published work in relation to pro-poor livelihood policies and the natural resources base in the Caribbean.

Background |
In relation to coastal zone management, much historical research focuses on the natural resources, institutions and macroeconomics of management, but this research is mostly sectorally organised, site specific and widely dispersed.
Purpose |
To improve technical understanding and the methods for management of coastal zone habitats.
Outputs |
A database collating all available information on the land water interface in the Caribbean.
An analysis of the interactions between stakeholders, activities and the resource base at the local, regional and national levels.
Identification of community perceptions of resources and livelihood options through stakeholder analyses in a selected small island (Tobago) and in an area of a large island (Portland Bight, Jamaica).
Recommendations made to DFID and regional partners on future researchable problems related to coastal zone livelihood issues.
Achievements |
The project outputs identified the gaps in quality and quantity of previously published work in relation to pro-poor livelihood policies and the natural resources base in the Caribbean.
The database developed by the project is a highly useful resource for target institutions.
The project provided significant inputs to a regional NRSP Land Water Interface (LWI) programme development workshop, held in Barbados, in June 2001 and assisted in developing future NRSP LWI research plans.
The project report was used in a subsequent NRSP cross cutting study (PD105, 'Livelihoods synthesis study: Key determinants of poor people's livelihood strategies and natural resources-related management opportunities'), which aimed to provide i) a characterisation of livelihood strategies and key natural resource-based factors influencing livelihoods, and ii) the identification and characterisation of key natural resource-related management opportunities.
