Project summary The purpose of the project was to review available information on the movement of sediments and pollutants of agricultural origin into the coastal zone in the Caribbean.

Description

Background The problem of agriculturally derived pollution and sediment impacting in the coastal zone is potentially very significant in the Caribbean. However, there are particular knowledge gaps at the upstream (watershed) and downstream (coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds) parts of the land-water interface.

Purpose To review currently available information on the movement of sediments and pollutants of agricultural origin into the coastal zone in the Caribbean, with particular emphasis on small-island developing states.

Outputs Information relating to 4 types of agricultural pollution was presented and assessed: soil erosion leading to siltation, nutrient enrichment, pesticide contamination, and agro-industrial pollution.

Achievements The review highlighted that there is little available information on the effects of agro-chemicals on the ecosystems in tropical coastal habitats.
